The European Precursors
The Spanish claim that their game of "One and Thirty", already being played in the 1500's was the precursor of blackjack. In this game the players are dealt three cards followed by three community cards placed in the center of the table, and the players much reach a count of 31.
Then the Italians claim that blackjack is just a variation of Baccarat where the player must reach a total of 9 points, or another game (played with only 40 cards) called Seven and a Half.
Then the French came and claimed that their games of Quinze (15) or Vingt-et-Un (21) were the precursors of blackjack. In fact, when blackjack was first introduced in America it was called Twenty-One like the French game.
Today's Blackjack
Twenty-one appeared in America somewhere in the 1800's. However, it was not very popular. At first only a private game, it began to appear in gambling halls and casinos in the early 1900's. Even then, not many played the game. In order to entice players, the casinos tried some bonus payouts. One such bonus, a 10 to 1 payout, was offered if the player's hand consisted of an Ace of Spades and a black jack (either spades or clubs). This hand was called "blackjack" for obvious reasons and the name stuck to the game.
Internet Blackjack was developed in the 1990s. Today, millions of people enjoy blackjack gambling online as well as in land-based casinos.
